How to Tell If Your Computer Has a Virus (and What to Do Next)
Posted in :
Viruses and other malware don’t always announce themselves. Some are obvious, others work quietly in the background. Here’s how to spot the warning signs and what to do if you think your computer is infected.
Common signs of a virus or malware
- Lots of pop-up adverts, even when you’re not browsing
- Your browser’s homepage or search engine has changed on its own
- New toolbars, extensions or programs you don’t remember installing
- Your computer has suddenly become much slower or the fan runs constantly
- Friends receive odd emails or messages from your accounts
- Your antivirus has been switched off and won’t turn back on
- Messages demanding payment to unlock your files
Beware of fake warnings
Some of the most common scams are pop-ups or phone calls claiming your computer is infected and telling you to call a number or let someone connect remotely. Genuine companies like Microsoft won’t contact you out of the blue like this. Never give remote access, passwords or payment details to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
What to do if you think you’re infected
- Disconnect from the internet. Unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi to stop the malware communicating or spreading.
- Don’t log in to anything important such as online banking on that computer until it’s been cleaned.
- Run a full scan with Windows Security (Microsoft Defender). It also offers an offline scan, which can catch threats that hide while Windows is running.
- Change your passwords using a different, clean device, starting with your email and banking. Turn on two-step verification where you can.
- Don’t pay a ransom if your files have been locked. Get advice first; paying doesn’t guarantee you’ll get anything back.
How to stay protected
Keep Windows and your apps up to date, use antivirus software, be wary of email attachments and links you weren’t expecting, and keep regular backups of your important files so an infection can’t take them from you.
