Wi-Fi Dead Spots at Home? 6 Ways to Improve Your Signal

Few things are more annoying than Wi-Fi that’s great in one room and useless in another. The good news is that patchy coverage can often be improved without changing your broadband provider. Here are six things to try.

1. Move your router

Wi-Fi spreads out from the router, so its position matters. Where you can, place it somewhere central and raised, such as on a shelf, rather than on the floor, in a cupboard or behind the TV. Thick walls, mirrors, fish tanks and large metal objects can all weaken the signal.

2. Restart and update it

Restarting your router can clear up slowdowns and dropouts. Many routers also receive firmware updates that improve stability and security; your provider’s app or the router’s settings page will usually show whether one is available.

3. Check whether it’s your Wi-Fi or your broadband

Run a speed test on a device right next to the router, then again in the room with the problem. If speeds are poor even next to the router, the issue may be your broadband connection rather than your Wi-Fi, and it’s worth contacting your provider.

4. Use the right band

Most modern routers broadcast on two bands. The 5GHz band is faster but has shorter range, while 2.4GHz reaches further but is slower and more prone to interference. If a device far from the router keeps dropping out, connecting it to 2.4GHz can help.

5. Consider a mesh Wi-Fi system

In larger homes, or homes with thick walls or extensions, a single router often can’t cover everywhere. A mesh system uses several units placed around the house that work together as one network, giving much more even coverage than a basic range extender.

6. Use a wired connection where it matters

For devices that stay in one place, such as a desktop PC, games console or smart TV, a wired Ethernet connection is usually faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. Where running cables isn’t practical, powerline adapters can carry your connection through your home’s electrical wiring.
