Why Is My Computer So Slow? 7 Things to Try First
Posted in :
A slow computer is one of the most common problems we hear about. The good news is that it doesn’t always mean you need a new one. Here are seven things worth trying first. The steps below are for Windows PCs and laptops.
1. Restart it properly
It sounds obvious, but many people only ever close the lid or put the computer to sleep. A full restart clears out programs that have been running in the background for days and often gives an instant speed boost.
2. Cut down start-up programs
Lots of programs set themselves to launch every time you switch on. Open Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to Startup apps and disable anything you don’t need running all the time. Leave anything you don’t recognise alone if you’re unsure.
3. Free up storage space
When the main drive is nearly full, everything slows down. Delete files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin and uninstall programs you don’t use. Windows also has a built-in Storage page in Settings that can clear temporary files for you.
4. Install updates
Run Windows Update and let it finish. Updates fix bugs and security holes, and some improve performance. It’s also worth updating your web browser.
5. Check for viruses and unwanted software
Malware and adware can quietly use up your computer’s resources. Run a full scan with Windows Security (Microsoft Defender), which is built into Windows.
6. Tidy up your web browser
If things are only slow online, your browser may be the problem. Close tabs you don’t need and remove browser extensions you don’t use or don’t remember installing.
7. Consider a simple upgrade
If your computer still has an older mechanical hard drive, swapping it for a solid-state drive (SSD) is one of the most effective upgrades there is, and can make an older machine feel far quicker. Adding more memory (RAM) can also help if you run lots of programs at once. Not every computer can be upgraded, so it’s worth getting advice first.
When to get help
If you’ve tried these steps and your computer is still slow, keeps freezing or makes unusual noises, there may be a hardware fault or a deeper software problem.
